Online Counseling — When AI Advice Leaves the Real Problem Untouched
You asked the AI. It wasn't enough.
You typed your situation into ChatGPT, or Claude, or Gemini. You described the fight, the distance, the thing your partner keeps doing. The model gave you a structured, reasonable answer. It named attachment styles, suggested communication frameworks from John Gottman's research, maybe referenced nonviolent communication or the work of Sue Johnson on emotionally focused couples therapy. The advice was not wrong. And you closed the window knowing nothing had changed. What large language models like GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet do well is pattern-matching to existing relational frameworks. What they cannot do is hold the specific weight of your situation: the history, the silences, the thing you almost said last Tuesday. Stefan Kohlweg, a systemic counselor in Vienna holding an MSc Psychosocial Counseling from Sigmund Freud University and a Lebens- und Sozialberatung trade license under Austrian Gewerbeordnung, works with exactly this gap. You write what happened; a structured reply comes back within 24 hours, at relateto.ai, for €99.

What the AI Gets Right, and What It Misses
There is a version of relationship advice that is genuinely useful to receive from a language model: factual information about attachment theory, a summary of what research says about contempt in couples communication, a neutral restatement of your situation that helps you see it from the outside. These are things GPT-4o and Claude do competently. They're also, for most people in real distress, not the thing they actually needed.
Systemic counseling starts from a different premise. The presenting problem — "my partner doesn't listen," "we keep having the same fight," "I don't know if I still love them" — is almost never the whole picture. Underneath it is a set of relational dynamics: who holds the anxiety in this system, where the distance is serving a function, what fear is making the conflict circular. A model trained on human writing can produce words about attachment anxiety. It cannot ask you the question that cracks the frame open, because it doesn't know what you haven't said. A human counselor who has read what you wrote, and who has been trained to read the structure under the surface, can.
That is the gap this practice is built for. If you have already tried the chatbot and found yourself back at the same place, that is information worth taking seriously. It means the question you're carrying is bigger than a pattern-match. You can write to bring it here.

04 — About
Stefan Kohlweg —
counselor & technologist
I hold an MSc in Psychosocial Counseling from Sigmund Freud University in Vienna, and a BA in Recording Arts from SAE Institute Vienna. The combination — a technical background alongside formal counseling training — shapes how I think about the intersection of people and the systems they live inside.
I work with individuals and couples through asynchronous email counseling that fits your life. Systemic techniques, always reviewed by me before delivery. The approach is rooted in communication and emotional dynamics, not in judgment.
The goal stays the same across every situation: clarity, less shame, and better conversation.
Every reply is a structured email written for the situation you've described. The clearest way to see what one looks like is to read a worked example end-to-end.
